2022 4th of July US Log Rolling Open

For the fourth year in a row, the 6th Annual US Log Rolling Open will take place in Gladstone, MI.   The event, carrying a purse of $5,000 dollars, returns on Monday, July 4th, as part of the Annual 4th of July Festival in Van Cleve Park. Log rolling will commence following the parade.

Several top pros on the circuit are scheduled to compete this year, including defending US Log Rolling Open Champions Anthony Polentini of Hartland, WI, and Livi Pappadopoulos, of Holmen, WI as well both Men’s and Women’s 2022 World Champions.  Other top competitors include 2019 US Log Rolling Open and World Champion, Tanner Hallett, and former Women’s World Champions Shana Verstegen and Ellie Davenport. Co-director, Katie Burke, will be competing in this year’s event as well.

Also competing will be Garrick Birdsong and Caitlin Lucas. Birdsong and Lucas have been assisting in revitalizing the Park & Rec program in Gladstone, also working with the boy scout group that has been rolling in town for the past few years.

The US Log Rolling Open will again be co-directed by legendary nine-time log rolling champion and Michigan native, Dan McDonough. McDonough, who grew up in Escanaba, MI is part of a rich history of Log Rolling in Northern Michigan. Other notable birlers who hail from the area are Gladstone native and 1926 World Champion, Billy Gerard; 1981 Champion Fred Sayklly; Don Jacobs who won 7 senior men’s World Championships; Lee Le Captain, Fred and Missy Sayklly, the River Kids, won numerous trick and fancy accolades. 

Throughout the 1980’s and 90’s, Gladstone hosted several pro log rolling events, including the 1999 Log Rolling World Championships.
