What is GIS?

A geographic information system (GIS) is a system that creates, manages, analyzes, and maps all types of data. GIS connects data to a map, integrating location data (where things are) with all types of descriptive information (what things are like there). This provides a foundation for mapping and analysis that is used in science and almost every industry. GIS helps users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context. The benefits include improved communication and efficiency as well as better management and decision making.

The City of Gladstone provides maps and data that are gathered and processed using our ESRI GIS software. The GIS department keeps track of all the cities infrastructure both digital and hard copy. We produce the city's web apps and web maps. We also manage the city's webpage and coordinate IT services for City Hall and all city departments.

GIS Department Mission Statement

Our mission is to deliver the easiest to understand representation of City assets and keep the data as up to date as we can. We pledge to gather, organize, and keep the cities data, appropriately secure and available for both our internal and external users.

The GIS office is located in City Hall, 1100 Delta Avenue Gladstone, MI 49837.
